22 May 2023 - Utility Warehouse (UW) is launching a new £1million customer service hub in Scotland next month, creating 80 new jobs.

UW, which has more than 880,000 customers and provides energy, broadband, mobile and home insurance services, has hired 25 new advisors for the hub in Selkirk. The FTSE 250 business plans to recruit up to 80 advisors over the next 18 months.

The Selkirk team will focus on UW’s energy prepayment customers, offering specialist support to customers on this tariff. Selkirk was chosen as the new office location as many people in the community already have a high level of customer service experience in the energy industry and UW wants to help keep local jobs in the area.

As part of the new hub’s opening, UW’s charitable arm is pledging a £16,000 donation to local Selkirk charities to reinforce the business’s commitment to the town. Two charities will receive £5,000 each, with two further charities receiving £3,000 each from the UW Foundation. UW’s Selkirk employees will help decide which charities receive the funding and this will be announced next month.

The Selkirk hub is UW’s second outside London. It is part of UW’s drive to create customer service “centres of excellence” across the country and follows the opening of a hub in Burnley last year.

It comes as UW customer numbers are up by almost 160,000 to 887,000 and the business is on track to welcome an extra million customers in the next four to five years - reflecting UW’s long-term strong competitive position.

Andrew Lindsay, Co-CEO of Utility Warehouse, said: “As a proud Scot, it’s great to be investing in Selkirk, creating local jobs and long-term career opportunities in the Scottish Borders. Our business is delivering exceptional growth as we help more families than ever before save on their essential household bills. Excellent customer service is fundamental to our success and our new Selkirk team will play a key role in ensuring our prepayment customers receive the very best help and advice.”

UW’s Selkirk hub is set to officially open on June 12th 2023 and is based in the Ettrick Riverside Business Centre.

South of Scotland Enterprise – the region’s economic and community development agency - own Ettrick Riverside Business Centre and have agreed to lease the space to create UW’s new Selkirk hub.

Professor Russel Griggs, Chair of South of Scotland Enterprise, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Utility Warehouse to Selkirk and the South of Scotland. Our new five year plan committed us to attracting ambitious investment, and the new UW hub will provide a significant boost to the local economy and provide opportunities for local people.”
