Who is my energy provider?

How to Find Your Energy Provider

Written by David Walter, Chief Commercial Officer

Updated on 13 Feb 2026 - Just moved into a new property? Find out who supplies your gas and electricity with our simple guide. Or, if you want to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal, we’ll walk you through how to find out who your current energy supplier is and what tariff you’re on.

How to find who supplies your gas and electricity: At a glance

If you don't have a recent paper bill or an email from a provider, you can usually find out who your gas and electricity suppliers are by:

  • For gas — Visit the Find My Supplier website and enter your postcode, or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.

  • For electricity — Use the Energy Networks Association (ENA) search tool to find your network operator, who can then tell you your supplier.

  • Check your smart meter — Many smart meter display units are branded, and sometimes show your supplier's name on the screen or under ‘Account Information’ or ‘Settings’.

  • Bank statements — Check your Direct Debit payments to see which company you send your monthly payments to.

Who supplies my gas?

If you’ve just moved home or you’re unsure who your gas provider is, don’t worry — it’s actually pretty easy to find out.

The quickest way is to use an online postcode checker.

The Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS) keeps the central database for all gas supply points in the UK. All you need to do is enter your postcode into their Find My Supplier tool.

Use the “Find My Supplier” service

Head to the online Find My Supplier tool, type in your postcode, and choose your address from the list. In just a few seconds, you’ll find out your:

  • Gas supplier — The company currently billing the property.

  • Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) — A unique 10-digit code for your gas connection (you'll need this if you decide to switch). Learn more about MPRN numbers and what they’re used for here.

  • Gas transporter — The company responsible for the physical pipes that deliver gas to your property.

This is usually the fastest way to find out who supplies your gas, especially if you’ve recently moved in.

Call the Meter Number Helpline

If you can’t find your address online, you can call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. They’ll help you find your gas supplier and confirm your supply details.

Their line is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, calls cost around 7p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge, and you’ll just need to give them your address.

Who supplies my electricity?

If you’re trying to figure out who provides my electricity, there’s an extra step compared to gas. That’s because one company runs the local electricity network, while another company actually bills you for the energy you use.

Here’s how to find your electricity supplier.

Find your Distribution Network Operator (DNO)

First, you’ll need to identify your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The DNO is the company responsible for the power lines, cables, and infrastructure in your area — not your electricity bills, but the physical network.

You can use the postcode search tool from the Energy Networks Association to find out who your DNO is. This is the starting point if you’re wondering how to find out who provides electricity to your home.

Contact your DNO

Once you know who your DNO is, you can contact them directly to find out who your electricity supplier is at your address. They can check their records and tell you who provides your electricity and which supplier is registered for your property.

This is the most reliable way to find your electricity supplier, especially if you’ve just moved in or you’re not sure who your current provider is.

How can I find my energy supplier when I’ve just moved house?

Just moved into your new place? Finding out who supplies your gas and electricity is one of those must-do tasks. Here's how to get the info you need:

  • Ask around — If you’re renting, ask your landlord, estate agent, or the previous owners. They’re likely to know who the current provider is, especially if you’re unsure how to set up or switch gas and electricity suppliers when renting.

  • Check your mail — Look out for letters addressed to ‘The Occupier’. If the previous tenants notified their supplier that they were moving, you might get a default letter with the energy provider’s details. This is a common way for suppliers to notify new residents of the account. If you’re moving soon, here’s our checklist for how to switch your utilities over.

Once you know who your supplier is, call them to confirm you’ve moved in. Don’t forget to give them meter readings from the day you moved — this ensures you only pay for the energy you’ve used, not what the last occupant racked up. While you’re on the call, it’s also a good time to ask what energy tariff you’re currently on.

If you haven’t actively chosen a new tariff, the supplier may have put you on their standard variable rate. These rates are influenced by Ofgem’s price cap, but they might not offer the best value compared to fixed-rate tariffs or bundling your services for a cheaper package.

What happens with my final gas and electricity bill when I move?

When moving out, it’s just as important to square things away with your old energy supplier.

Here’s how to close out your account properly:

  1. Give notice to your supplier — Let your gas and electricity suppliers know at least 48 hours in advance that you’re moving. Giving them a move-out date helps avoid billing issues and ensures your account is prepared for closure.

  2. Take a final meter reading — Before you hand over the keys, take final gas and electricity readings and jot them down.

  3. Call your supplier — Inform them of your moving date and the final readings, so they can send you a final bill. When you speak to them, it’s worth asking if they can help set up your energy services at your new home. This could save you the hassle of switching to a brand-new supplier.

  4. Forwarding address — Give your previous supplier your new address. This way, they can send any last correspondence, including that final bill.

  5. Settle any balances — Check your final bill against the meter readings you provided. If you owe anything, clear it to avoid late fees. If you’ve overpaid, expect a refund.

  6. Confirm closure — Call your supplier to make sure your account is fully closed after the final bill is paid. This prevents any future surprises!

How to find which energy plan you're on

Want to know exactly what tariff you’re paying for?
Here's how to get the details:

Check your latest bill

Your energy bill will have all the info you need, including the tariff name, unit rates, and any standing charges you’re currently paying. If you use a prepayment meter, you won’t have a bill, but you can check your meter or your annual statement instead.

Call your supplier

Can’t find the details on your bill? Just give your provider a call, and they’ll let you know what plan you’re on. Keep your bill handy, though—they’ll probably ask for your account details. If you’re a UW customer, you can sign in to your account here to find out what tariff you’re currently on.

Should you switch to a new energy supplier?

Switching energy suppliers can be a good way to make sure you’re not overpaying, but it’s worth checking a few things before you decide.

  • Review your current deal

Check whether you’re on a fixed or variable plan, as this makes it easier to compare energy tariffs options. If you have more than 50 days left on a fixed deal, you might have to pay an 'exit fee' to switch.

  • Explore tariff types

Decide if you want the price certainty of a fixed energy tariff, which protects you from price rises, or a variable tariff that can go down if market prices fall. Find out whether a fixed or variable tariff is right for you with our guide. Also, check whether you could benefit from options like EV tariffs for electric vehicle owners.

  • Understand your energy usage

Look at recent bills to see how much gas and electricity your household typically uses. This helps you get a more accurate quote, as some providers may ask for this data rather than using an estimate.

  • Compare more than just the price

Don’t focus only on the headline rate. Check unit rates, standing charges, contract length and any exit fees. Reviewing full pricing details helps you avoid unexpected costs.

  • Think about tools that help you save

Features like smart meters let you track your energy use in real time, making it easier to manage bills and reduce waste.

  • Look at any added benefits

Some suppliers offer extras alongside their tariffs. Free smart meters can be a game-changer for saving energy and keeping your bills in check. Other perks like a cashback card or bundling multiple services together could add extra value for your household (like here at Utility Warehouse; learn about our bundles and how much you could save here).
