Why do I need to know who my energy supplier is?

Whether you’ve just unpacked your last box or you’ve been in your home for a while, knowing who’s supplying your electricity and gas is essential.
Here’s why:

Customer support

Stuff happens. A sudden power cut or a spike in your bill can leave you needing help fast. Knowing who supplies your energy means you can reach out to their customer service team to get back on track without breaking a sweat.

Manage your energy costs

Energy prices can jump around, and tariffs can change quicker than you'd think – especially with the price cap. Your supplier may adjust their rates based on market conditions, so staying informed helps you keep a handle on your bills and avoid any nasty surprises.

Switch to a better tariff

Not loving your current energy plan? Maybe it's time to switch things up. Knowing who your supplier is and what tariff you’re on makes it easier to compare plans and find one that suits you better. Whether it’s switching from a fixed tariff to a variable one or just looking for lower rates, you’ve got options.

Who is my gas supplier?

Finding out who supplies your gas is a breeze—no need for detective work here! Just follow these steps:

  1. Use the Find My Supplier Tool — Go online, enter your postcode, and select your address. Within seconds, you'll know who’s supplying your gas and your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN)—a handy code used to identify your gas supply.

  2. Call the Meter Number Helpline — Can’t find your address in the tool? No worries! Call the Meter Number Helpline at 0870 608 1524. They’ll let you know who your gas supplier is. Heads up, though: calls cost around 7p per minute.

Who supplies my electricity?

Tracking down your electricity supplier takes a bit more legwork, but it’s still simple enough:

  1. Check your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — Your DNO is responsible for maintaining the electrical network in your area. Use the Energy Network Association’s tool to find your DNO by entering your postcode.

  2. Give them a call — Once you know who your DNO is, give them a ring and ask who supplies electricity to your property.

How can I find my energy supplier when I’ve just moved house?

Just moved into your new place? Finding out who supplies your gas and electricity is one of those must-do tasks. Here's how to get the info you need:

  • Ask around — If you’re renting, ask your landlord, estate agent, or the previous owners. They’re likely to know who the current provider is.

  • Check your mail — Look out for letters addressed to ‘The Occupier’. If the previous tenants notified their supplier that they were moving, you might get a default letter with the energy provider’s details. This is a common way for suppliers to notify new residents of the account.

Once you know who your supplier is, call them to confirm you’ve moved in. Don’t forget to give them meter readings from the day you moved — this ensures you only pay for the energy you’ve used, not what the last occupant racked up.

What happens with my final gas and electricity bill when I move?

When moving out, it’s just as important to square things away with your old energy supplier.

Here’s how to close out your account properly:

  1. Take a final meter reading — Before you hand over the keys, take final gas and electricity readings and jot them down.

  2. Call your supplier — Inform them of your moving date and the final readings, so they can send you a final bill. When you speak to them, it’s worth asking if they can help set up your energy services at your new home. This could save you the hassle of switching to a brand-new supplier.

  3. Forwarding address — Give your previous supplier your new address. This way, they can send any last correspondence, including that final bill.

  4. Settle any balances — Check your final bill against the meter readings you provided. If you owe anything, clear it to avoid late fees. If you’ve overpaid, expect a refund.

  5. Confirm closure — Call your supplier to make sure your account is fully closed after the final bill is paid. This prevents any future surprises!

How to find which energy plan you're on

Want to know exactly what tariff you’re paying for?
Here's how to get the details:

Check your latest bill

Your energy bill will have all the info you need, including the tariff name and rates you’re currently on. If you use a prepayment meter, you won’t have a bill, but you can check your meter or your annual statement instead.

Call your supplier

Can’t find the details on your bill? Just give your provider a call, and they’ll let you know what plan you’re on. Keep your bill handy, though—they’ll probably ask for your account details. If you’re a UW customer, you can sign into your account here to find out what tariff you’re currently on.

  • Review your usage — Take a look at your recent bills to figure out your average gas and electricity usage. This will help you choose a plan that works for your household.

  • Compare tariffs — Browse through different energy tariff options, whether they’re fixed or variable-rate. Choose a plan that gives you the best bang for your buck.

  • Consider extra perks — Some energy providers offer perks like free smart meters to help you monitor and reduce your energy usage. Free smart meters can be a game changer for saving energy and keeping your bills in check.
