How the price cap is affecting the energy market?

Based on Ofgem's typical domestic usage, the energy price cap level is set to rise by £221 to £1,862 per year from July 2026. This reflects a typical household that uses gas and electricity and pays by direct debit.

Ofgem sets the price cap to make sure prices are fair for users on default energy tariffs, and that it reflects the underlying costs and inflation of the energy market. They review and update the price cap every three months to stay aligned with market conditions. You can learn more about energy price cap costs and predictions and how it may impact your energy bills.

FAQs

Your energy services will go live between two and five working days. We’ll keep you updated on any progress during this time.

No – in a few weeks, we’ll ask you for meter readings, at which point we’ll start billing you for your energy, and your current supplier will stop billing you. So you won’t pay for the same energy twice. Your old supplier will then arrange to send you a final invoice. We recommend leaving your Direct Debit in place until that invoice has been paid.

Some suppliers may charge a cancellation fee if you're in contract or on a Fixed-term tariff. It's best to check this with your current supplier.

Yes - switching energy suppliers is a simple process. All you need to do is get a quote from us to get started; then, we’ll contact your old provider on your behalf and get your services switched over for you. It’s that easy.

No, we’ll contact your energy provider to let them know about your move.

After a few weeks, we’ll ask you for meter readings, at which point we’ll start billing you for your energy, and your current supplier will stop (so you won't pay for the same energy twice). Your old supplier will then arrange to send you a final invoice.

If you’re moving home and don’t want to take your current energy supplier with you, you can switch in the same way as you usually would. You’ll just need to provide information on your current address and the address of where you’re moving to. Get a quote to get started.

No. We work hard to ensure a seamless switching process for our customers so we can guarantee that there’ll be no disruption to your services.

Yes, switching energy suppliers when renting is fine as long as you currently pay the gas and electricity bills at your rented property. If your landlord pays the utility bills, you may need their permission before switching.

Smart meters are advanced devices that measure and record electricity and gas consumption in near real-time. Smart meters automatically send us your electricity and gas meter readings through secure wireless networks, so you don’t have to. This works in the same way as other wireless systems like mobile phones, but you don’t need Wi-Fi or internet access in your home for smart meters to work.

If you have a second-generation smart meter, or a first-generation smart meter made by Secure, it will transfer to us with all its smart benefits intact. We’ll start communicating with it to collect your accurate readings.

If you have a first-generation smart meter not made by Secure, it may not work with us in smart mode, so you may need to give us meter readings.

Our first-generation smart meters are made by the company Secure. Other suppliers who also use them include Utilita, Ovo, E.On and Octopus.
