How will my gas bill be affected by the energy price cap?

Based on Ofgem's typical domestic usage, the energy price cap level is set to £1,641 per year, taking effect from 1 April 2026. This change reflects a typical household that uses gas and electricity and pays by direct debit.

Ofgem sets the price cap to make sure prices are fair for users on default energy tariffs, and that it reflects the underlying costs and inflation of the energy market. They review and update the price cap every three months to stay aligned with market conditions. You can learn more about energy price cap costs and predictions and how it may impact your energy bills.

FAQs

It can take two to five working days to get you switched over from your existing provider. During that time, we’ll do all the work so you won’t have to worry about anything.

We’ll keep you updated throughout the process, but you can also track the progress via our free mobile app.

No, we’ll contact your current gas provider to let them know about your move.

In a few weeks, we’ll ask you for meter readings; at this point, we’ll start billing you for your gas, and your current supplier will stop (so you won't pay for the same energy twice).

If your balance is in credit, your old supplier will then arrange to send you a final invoice and refund your money back to you. If your balance is in debt, we recommend you clear this with your current supplier before switching to UW.

All traditional or non-smart meters are different, but the basic rules for reading them are typically the same: always read the numbers from left to right and ignore any numbers in red or after a decimal point.

If you have a smart meter, models tend to vary slightly more. You can find out how to read your smart meter for your manufacturer’s meter here.

If you’ve just moved into a property and aren’t sure who your gas supplier is, enter your postcode into the Energy Network Association search tool to find your network operator.

Then, you can contact your network operator for your supplier details. They’ll also be able to provide you with your electricity Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN), which tells your energy supplier where your meter is and your gas supply number.

Your gas meter measures the amount of gas you’ve used in cubic metres or cubic feet. We take your reading and convert this to kWh when we calculate your bill.

The calculation to convert kWh is different depending on whether you have a metric or imperial gas meter:

  • For metric meters – We multiply the cubic metre (m3) figure by the Correction Factor (1.02264) and then by the Calorific Value (CV). Finally, we divide the result by 3.6 to reach your kWh figure.

  • For imperial meters – The calculation is the same, except we have to first convert a cubic feet (ft3) measurement into cubic metres. We do this by multiplying it by 2.83.

We then multiply each kWh you use by your unit rate.

Find out more about how your gas bill is calculated here.

Calorific Value (CV) relates to how much heat is generated when a certain amount of gas is completely burned away.

Essentially, CV measures the quality of gas supplied to a property. Each bill we send you will show the CV that's been calculated for your area for that month, and it will range between 37.5 and 43.0.
