The Utilit-Eye Test: Helping a ‘bill-blind’ nation see their utilities differently
New research reveals that two-thirds (67%) of Brits don’t fully understand their bills, and 70% have stopped reading them altogether.
After years of juggling multiple providers, confusing jargon, and unexpected mid-contract price hikes, many of us have become ‘bill-blind’: settling with poor service and complicated paperwork because it feels too difficult to fix.
That’s why we launched the Utilit-Eye Test campaign: to shine a light on the bad behaviour of big providers and show the UK that there’s an easier way to manage their utilities.
By commissioning nationwide research and creating our very own Utilit-Eye Test, we’re challenging the nation to test their ‘utility vision’ and bring their home services back into focus with one simple bill.
Bill-blindness in numbers: What we found
Our nationwide study of 2,000 UK households confirms that utilities have become a source of constant frustration. Rather than dealing with the confusion, many of us are simply switching off, leaving us vulnerable to price hikes and bad service because the current system feels too difficult to fix.
67% of Brits admit they don’t fully understand what they are paying for on their monthly bills.
70% of people don't read their bills at all
Over half of the UK(55%) stick with providers they believe treat them badly because they don't see a better alternative
39% feel completely unsupported by their current provider when they need help with a bill
Just under a third (30%) feel they’re treated like ‘just another customer’ rather than a person with real concerns
75% would switch for a more friendly and helpful customer service
73% want to be able to speak to a real person about their account
72% would move for more honest communication about price changes
61% would prefer the simplicity of having just one bill for multiple services
These results tell a clear story: the UK’s utility market is failing the very people it’s supposed to serve. It’s not just that bills are hard to read; it’s that the big providers have become completely faceless. When seven in ten people stop reading their bills entirely, it’s a sign that they’ve given up on trying to make sense of the jargon.
We’ve been let down for so long that many of us now accept poor service and ‘just another customer’ treatment as the norm, because finding a better way feels too difficult..
But the appetite for something different, something better, is huge..
These numbers show that we aren’t just looking for a cheaper deal; we’re looking for a provider that offers honesty, simplicity, and a real person to talk to.
How we’re challenging the UK to see differently
Data is one thing, but seeing is believing.
To help the nation banish bill-blindness, we’ve launched the Utilit-Eye Test, our own spin on your traditional sight exam that’s designed to put your ‘utility vision’ to the test. We aren't just talking about bill-blindness, we’re showing people how to fix it by bringing 20/20 vision to the UK’s utilities.
To bring this campaign to life, we created bold test boards that you can download below, and custom-made reading glasses crafted from recycled, nonsense-filled bills. All designed to encourage customers to start looking at their providers in a new light — and how Utility Warehouse does things differently when it comes to utilities.

Watch the video below as Clare Hingott, Utility Warehouse Partner, takes to the streets to challenge the public to take the Utilit-Eye Test. By putting their ‘utility vision’ to the test, Clare showed just how much easier life could be if utility bills weren’t as testing as a trip to the optician.
View your home services in a new light
We don’t believe that bill-blindness should be the status quo. Utility Warehouse exists to help people, not confuse them. That’s why we offer a simpler, fairer, and more human way to run your home.

Here’s how we do it:
One bill. One account. Real savings.
The secret to 20/20 utility vision is simplicity. While other providers keep you juggling different accounts and dates, Utility Warehouse brings your Energy, Broadband, and Mobile services into one single monthly bill.
By tying everything together, we help you stop worrying about the paperwork. And it isn’t just about making life easier; it’s about making it cheaper, too. Our multiservice bundle is designed so that the more services you switch to us, the more you save.
Unlike the other big providers, we offer:
Bundled benefits — A cheaper overall service cost when you combine your utilities.
Price certainty — No mid-contract price hikes on all of our Broadband deals. Ever.
The potential for even more savings — The UW Cashback Card gives our customers the chance to earn additional savings on their everyday shopping, helping them reduce the cost of their bills even further.
One point of contact — One monthly bill and one app to manage your entire home.
Award-winning service — We’ve made it our mission to deliver the helpful customer service that three-quarters of the nation is asking for – and we’ve got the awards to prove it.
“We believe in the power of doing things differently. Whether it's a friendly Partner to talk to about your account, or our app that shows one bill for all your services, we're making life easier for our customers. We created the Utilit-Eye test to show the millions of Brits suffering through poor service and mid-contract price hikes that there is a better way to do things - in one place, with people, not paperwork.”
David Walter - Chief Commercial Officer

Methodology
The findings featured in the Utilit-Eye Test campaign are based on a nationwide study commissioned by Utility Warehouse conducted in December 2025.
Utility Warehouse polled 2,000 UK adults who pay for their household bills. The research explored consumer attitudes toward current energy and utility providers, levels of understanding regarding industry terminology, and the prospect of switching.
