You might hear it called an electricity supply number, but it’s not the same as your meter serial number (the number actually printed on your meter). The MPAN exists behind the scenes, linking your electricity meter to the right property and supplier, ensuring that the energy you’re using is being billed to you and not, say, your next-door neighbour who always leaves their lights on.
It’s the equivalent of your home’s postcode in the electricity grid: specific, essential, and uniquely yours.
Why is an MPAN number important?
Your MPAN number plays a role in:
Switching electricity suppliers – If you want a better energy deal, your new supplier needs your MPAN to ensure they’re switching the right meter.
Accurate billing – Your energy supplier uses this number to calculate and send you the correct electricity bill.
Verifying your meter – When reporting faults or requesting meter changes, your MPAN is the reference that links everything together.
Moving home — If you’re moving, knowing the MPAN can speed up the process of setting up with a new supplier.
Avoiding mix-ups – Your MPAN keeps your electricity usage tied to the correct household.
So, while it’s not a number you’ll use daily, it’s one that matters when it counts.
Breaking Down an MPAN Number
An MPAN is made up of 21 digits split into different sections, each with its own meaning. Here’s a breakdown of what those numbers represent:
Section | Meaning |
Profile Class | Identifies whether the property is domestic or commercial |
Meter Time Switch Code (MTC) | Defines the type of meter and tariff |
Line Loss Factor (LLF) | Determines distribution network charges |
Distribution ID | Identifies the regional network operator |
Meter Point ID | The unique reference for your electricity supply |
Check Digit | Used for validation purposes |
Example MPAN: 12 345 678 9101 234 5678 91
Let’s break it down:
Profile Class (12) – This number shows whether the meter is domestic or business-related.
MTC (345) – Defines the type of meter (e.g., single-rate or multi-rate tariff).
LLF (678) – Represents electricity distribution costs.
Distribution ID (16) – Points to the regional network operator responsible for your electricity supply.
Meter Point ID (234 5678 91) – The unique reference for your electricity supply point.

MPAN Distribution IDs by Region
Region | Operator | Distribution ID |
London | UK Power Networks | 12 |
South East | UK Power Networks | 19 |
North West | Electricity North West | 16 |
Scotland | Scottish Power Energy Networks | 18 |

How to Find Your MPAN Number
Finding your MPAN isn’t as simple as checking your meter because it’s not actually printed on your meter. Instead, here’s where you can locate it:
On Your Electricity Bill
Your MPAN number is usually listed on your electricity bill under a section labelled Supply Number. Look for a box with a large ‘S’ before a long string of numbers.
Contacting Your Supplier
If you don’t have a bill handy, your electricity supplier should be able to provide your MPAN over the phone.
Local Distribution Network Operator (DNO)
If you still can’t track it down, your local DNO (Distribution Network Operator) can help. They manage the electricity supply in your region and can provide your MPAN. Learn more about finding your DNO here.
What is an MPRN Number?
An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is the gas version of an MPAN. It’s a unique number that identifies your gas supply point. Unlike MPANs, which are 21 digits long, MPRNs are shorter, typically 6 to 10 digits.
How to Find Your MPRN Number
On Your Gas Bill
MPRNs are listed on your gas bill, usually labelled as Meter Point Reference Number.
On Your Gas Meter
Unlike MPANs, some gas meters do have the MPRN printed directly on them. If you can’t find it, your gas supplier can provide it for you.
Common Questions About MPAN and MPRN Numbers
MPANs and MPRNs are crucial for managing your electricity and gas supply. Whether you’re switching suppliers, moving home, or just want to make sure your bills are accurate, knowing how to find and use these numbers is invaluable.
